An interview with Raj Chovatiya, MD, PhD
Dr. Chovatiya is an Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois.
Dr. Chovatiya discusses the benefits of a moisturization routine as a complement to all currently available therapies for patients with atopic dermatitis.
“When we think about treatment for atopic dermatitis, we oftentimes are thinking about topical anti-inflammatory therapies, potentially oral anti-inflammatory therapies, injectable biologics, oral JAK inhibitors, and even some more broadly acting older medications, but really at the foundation of all this therapy is optimized bathing and moisturization.
Moisturization is the first thing that we think about for treatment across severities when it comes to atopic dermatitis and many other forms of eczema. I think with a lot of the updates, breaking news, and clinical trials that we see in this space, we often lose sight of the fact that this is really an important dayto- day aspect of care management for our patients.
I think we need to remind ourselves that taking care of atopic dermatitis starts with really good skincare, and really good skincare starts with optimized moisturization practices, i.e., being really diligent and making sure it’s something you’re doing on a regular basis as a part of your overall care strategy.”
